Our location provides a perfect setting of peace and tranquillity, yet is easily accessible from the motorway, making Appleton's ideal for a weeks holiday or as a stopping point for travellers heading to the South of France and the Mediterranean. We are 6 hours from Calais and just 10 minutes from the A20, exit 17. The Limoges and Poitiers airports are within 1-1.5 hours drive respectively. The main route by train from Paris to Toulouse stops near-by in the town of Argenton sur Creuse or Chateauroux. We are quite happy too provide transport to and from the airports and train stations for a nominal fee. | | We are surrounded by fabulous tourist sites; the historic medieval market town of Argenton sur Creuse is just 8 km and Chateauroux, the capital of Indre (Department 36), is located within 30 km. The Eguzon lake-park and the Three Lakes district with their stunning views is just up river with its variety of water sports is a 20-minute drive, closer to hand, the Brenne National park is minutes away. We have all the information available for you to make the most of your stay in our region and we are happy to assist in any way. | | Why not stop off at Appletons if you are on your way to Carcassonne Perpignan or Toulouse just a days drive away from us in the Midi Pyrenees and Languedoc Roussillon regions of France, or the beaches of the Mediterranean, the wine areas of the Corbieres and Limoux, or the foothills of the Pyrenees. We are 30 kilometres from the capital of the region Chateauroux and 8 kilometres from the historical medieval town Argenton-sur-Creuse with its ancient houses almost sliding into the river Creuse.
Argenton-sur-Creuse has a lovely town square where you can sit and drink coffee, it has many shops for you to spend time looking in, or visit the market on Saturdays which is supported heavily by the locals as most of the meats, fruit and vegetables are organic, or visit the museum based at the archaeological dig at Argentomagus, the former Roman town.
Limoges is a wonderful city to explore, only an hours drive south and with many fine restaurants, excellent shopping facilities and a wealth of delightful galleries, museums and local outlets for the famous Limoges pottery.
Poitiers is an hour and a half's drive, it is a charming town which again, is well worth a visit, and famous for the fantastic cinematographically centre of Futuroscope, as is the new 'Vallee de Singes', which houses over 15 species of primates and 200 animals without cages. Futuroscope is a serious days outing and the facilities are marvellous. Also see the department of the Vienne for days out
La Brenne Natural Park with its thousand lakes is a vast conservation area dotted with lakes and criss-crossed with bridle paths. There are organised hikes or you can simply set out on your own with a map.
At the Maison de la Brenne, there is an interpretive centre where visitors can learn about the region, its ancient traditions of fish farming and nature conservation.
A visit to the vast lake ( Lac Chambon )at Eguzon is a must. The lake stretches for twenty-five kilometres and is the perfect place where you can learn to water-ski, sail and windsurf. There are several beaches for swimming and restaurants with a wonderful choice of menus.
La Chatre is famous for being the home town of George Sands , who was among others one of Chopin's mistresses, and Gargilesse, where George Sands had a small home, now home to an assortment of artists whose studios are open to the public. | | Directions | Come off at junction 17 of the A20 and follow the signs for Montlucon, La Chatre, Neuvy St Sepulchre, about 1 Kms down that road just under a bridge you will see signs on the left for the D927 direction Montlucon, La Chatre, this is the D927, if you are going too fast and miss these signs it may be easier to head into Argenton as there are more signs at the first round-about in Argenton, at the round about follow the signs for Montlucon, La Chatre, Neuvy St Sepulchre, you go past Lidl and then will get to a stop street, about 3-4 Kms at the stop street turn Right.
